World's AIDS Day

Summary Image
Every year on this day – December 1st, 2009, people around the globe celebrate a day that has taken the lives of over 25 million people.

World's AIDS Day not only reminds us of those who have passed away but also honours the 33.4 million people living with the disease today!  Since 1988 AIDS day has been celebrated all around the world. Raising awareness of the disease and educating people about what they can do to prevent and protect themselves from contracting HIV/AIDS - is the ultimate goal of the day.

Now of course one day cannot alleviate the pain and suffering that HIV/AIDS has brought to millions around the world, but the day – today – reminds us that there’s still so much work left to be done.  There are so many youth who do not completely understand the repercussions of the disease.  Every year 2.7 million new infections occur and half of these people are under the age of 25. Due to lack of resources and awareness, Africa has been hit with HIV/AIDS the hardest– a little over 22 million people in Africa live with a disease that is in fact preventable and curable.

We need to do our part in raising awareness  - through educating others and ourselves there is a great possibility that we can live to see a day where HIV/AIDS is "no more"!  You’re already making a difference in the world by reading this and supporting causes on Better The World, that raises money for and awareness of HIV/AIDS. Let’s make today, a day that is the beginning of many more days to come in educating people and honouring those who live with a pandemic that has taken far too many lives!

I applaud all those that proudly wore the red ribbon yesterday - and I loved that the CN Tower in Toronto was lit up in red in honour of those living with, and fighting against, HIV/AIDS. Check it out: http://www.cntower.ca/plan_your_visit/attractions/night_lighting/
