About This Cause

Need

The growth of the African population was estimated at a rate of 2.6% in 1980 according to the PRB. During the same period the agricultural sector, accounting for approximately 60% of population declined from 2.4% to 0.3%. Such a deficit between the rapid growth of the population and sudden agricultural decline has caused two thirds of the continent to become chronically poor, with a massive increase in hunger, malnutrition and poverty.

Solution

IAA's plan is to focus on one African community at a time. the objective is to form an alliance that brings together 100 farmers and landowners in Zambakro, region of Yamoussoukro Cote D'Ivoire. By providing farming equipments, we will assist the co-op in developing 2,000 acres of land for rice production during the year. Because of the mechanization, program participants will be able to cultivate all their available lands. Up to 50% of the total production from each farmer will be jointly managed with IAA to be sold on the local market, neighboring regions for the purpose of making food affordable for all. Some of the proceeds will be used to maintain existing equipments and acquire additional equipments in an effort to expand the program to other farmers in different regions and countries.

Impact

The program requires every participant to create one employment position for every 5 acres of land they own. A co-op of 100 farmers averaging 20 acres of land per farmer will create 400 jobs and produce 6,300 metric tons of rice (Yield of rice per acre: 2100 kg) for local markets. This surge in food supply will cause prices to decrease, making food affordable for not only the community but also neighboring regions.
