About This Cause
Need
Many individuals and families in our communities simply can't make ends meet and end up homeless on our streets. If they are not always visable, they are there. The lack of affordable housing in communities across Canada is one of the most significant factors contributing to the rise of hunger and homelessness. Young families, single parents, low-income workers and people on fixed incomes are most in need.
Solution
Your support will help United Way and agencies adjust the root causes of hunger and homelessness. Your support will also provide much needed relief for the hungry and homeless, such as: shelter, meals, counselling and drop-in centres, breakfasts to young children who would otherwise go hungry, and "FoodShare" programs to enable low-income families to buy fresh food at affordable prices.
Impact
Provide agencies with the ability to give helpful support and solutions to people living with hunger and homelessness.
Frances Lankin, President and CEO of United Way of Greater Toronto, presents the findings of a United Way report, Monday, November 26, 2007, in Toronto. The report, Losing Ground: The Persistent Growth of Family Poverty in Canada's Largest City, reveals one in four Toronto families is struggling in poverty, opening up an ever-widening gap between them and families in the rest of Canada.
