Need

People all over the world have inadequate access to clean water. They are forced to use sources that contains disease-transmitting bacteria, dangerous pathogens, or even sources that have high levels of chemicals. This water causes serious chronic illnesses and remains a major cause of death in most developing countries: in fact, 90% of deaths of children under 5 are caused by unsafe water, and the ones it doesn't kill have their immune system weakened by the water.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that lack of clean water causes 1.8 million deaths each and every year, while around 1.1 billion people worldwide lack proper drinking water.

Solution

Water is one of the necessities of life. People in developing countries need access to a sufficient amounts of clean water, just like everybody. In most parts of the world, the locals get their water from streams that have been directly contaminated, and even wells cannot eliminate the risk of contamination. They need proper water purification technology just as they need to have clean water readily available and distributed fairly with water distribution systems.

TakingITGlobal has a large member base, and many of them are dedicated to increasing awareness among youth all around the world about issues like clean water. TakingITGlobal is doing its part by providing resources and courses/seminars to help spread the awareness of these problems, and by doing so rallying more support for causes like clean water. We offer an online community for youth interested in positive change that engages them with the world, and provides a platform for these youth to inspire each other through cross-cultural connections.

TakingITGlobal is also involved in some international conferences that are geared towards positive change.

Impact

In an impact survey conducted by TIG in early 2008, 82% of members made friendships through TIG, 69% agree that TIG has improved the ability of young people to effect change and 65% have formed cross-cultural collaborations or partnerships. We've been deeply involved with events like the International AIDS Conferences, UN Climate Change Conference, World Summit on the Information Society and the World Urban Forum.

By supporting our efforts to give young people the opportunity to make a difference today, they will be well-placed to continue contributing for years to come. This is an investment that affects all demographics, sectors and countries.

TakingITGlobal has also been given several awards for its international work with youth, including two World's Most Democratic Workplaces in 2007 and 2008, as well as Microsoft Education Award in 2007.

Currently we have a petition running for promoting clean water. See it here: http://petitions.tigweb.org/Ojeremen
